Managing Categories: Create, Reorder, Show/Hide & Time Limits
Every family's priorities differ: some focus on pinyin and first words, some on original English listening, and some want pure entertainment animation limited to weekends.
This guide covers creating categories, long-press drag reordering, showing/hiding with the eye icon, and powerful per-category time limits.
[!TIP] 30-second category quick-start
- Drag to reorder: Move this term's main courses to position #1 so your child sees them the moment they turn on the tablet;
- Hide with one tap: Tap the eye icon and a category disappears from your child's screen instantly — no content is ever lost;
- Per-category time limits: Lock animation on weekdays, allow 30 minutes on weekends, and leave English and science unlimited — precise, flexible control;
- Core categories are protected: The 6 built-in categories can be renamed, hidden, and reordered — but not deleted, to protect the core knowledge framework.
1. Preset Categories vs. Your Own Custom Categories
The app comes with 6 core knowledge categories designed around children's cognitive development:
- Fun Chinese Classics, Science Encyclopedia, Logic & Thinking, English Starter, Arts & Life: cover everyday general knowledge and subject learning;
- Weekend Fun: comes with a built-in rule (locked on weekdays, open with limits on weekends).
[!NOTE] Built-in category safety The 6 preset categories carry the "System" badge and can't be deleted (to protect the basic subject framework) — but they can be renamed, hidden, and reordered freely.
2. Core Category Operations
2.1 Create a custom category
- Open the app and go to [[Parent Center]] → tap [[Category Management]];
- Tap [[+ New Category]] in the top-right;
- Enter a name (for example: "Pinyin for Pre-School", "LEGO Mechanics", "Classic Poems Recited");
- Tap Save — the app assigns a color and icon automatically, and it appears on your child's screen right away.
2.2 Drag to reorder (first-glance focus principle)
When your child opens the tablet, the first category they see is the one at the top.
- In the Category Management list, long-press any category card;
- Drag up or down to change its order in the child's top navigation bar;
- Pro tip: If your child is in the pre-school pinyin phase, drag "Pinyin & Literacy" to position #1 so their attention lands on the core task first.
2.3 Hide categories you don't need
Some categories aren't in use this term, or you don't want them to distract:
- Tap the eye icon next to a category (show/hide toggle);
- Hidden categories get a "hidden" marker and disappear completely from the child's home screen;
- All videos and playback progress stay 100% intact — tap the eye icon again to bring them back.
2.4 Rename & delete custom categories
- Tap the "···" menu next to a category;
- Tap [[Rename]] to update the name to match your term plan;
- For categories you created, tap [[Delete]] to remove them (if the category still contains videos, the app will ask whether to move them, so nothing is lost).
3. Advanced: Per-Category Time Limits & Weekday/Weekend Split
Many parents want: "Let my child watch more original English animation, but lock the pure-fun cartoons Monday–Friday and allow only 30 minutes on weekends."
Per-category time limits make this easy:
- Go to [[Parent Center]] → [[Category Management]] → tap the category;
- Switch between "Weekdays (Mon–Fri)" and "Weekend (Sat–Sun)" as two separate dimensions;
- Choose an allowance for each:
- Unlimited: no independent cap for this category (still protected by the global daily total — e.g. English listening);
- Locked: fully locked on that day; your child sees a friendly "Not available yet" message;
- A specific number of minutes: e.g. 15 minutes on weekdays. When the time runs out, only that category locks — other learning content still plays fine.
4. FAQ & Category Tips
Q: If I delete a custom category, are the videos inside deleted too?
Absolutely not! When deleting, the app asks whether to move the videos to another category (like "Uncategorized") or remove them from the library. Your videos and scheduling records never get lost by deleting a category.
Q: Why don't the 6 preset categories have a delete button?
The 6 presets form the base of the children's knowledge tree. To prevent accidental damage to the home screen structure, physical deletion is locked. Don't need one? Just tap its eye icon to hide it — the effect is the same as deleting.
Q: My child always taps the entertainment category. How can I guide them?
- Set the entertainment category to "Locked on weekdays, 30 minutes on weekends";
- Long-press and drag your main science or English category to position #1;
- Combine with the pinned big feature card on the home screen for a clear learning picture at startup.
